Born the son of a journalist, as a boy Gauguin lived in Lima, Peru for four years. Gauguin began painting as an amateur while working as a stockbroker. He met Pissarro in 1876 and exhibited with the Impressionists (1879-1882). After devoting himself entirely to painting, he experienced great poverty and ill-health.
